About Aikido Iloilo

Aikido Iloilo (DTI registered as Aikido Iloilo Martial Arts Training Center) is a non-profit organization founded in August 25, 2023 by Iloilo-based Yudansha students of Aikido Philippines (an Aikikai Foundation accredited organization in the Philippines).

While working in Manila for several years, the founders and staff of Aikido Iloilo managed to train in the martial art during their spare time, until each has reached black belt levels.

The establishment of Aikido Iloilo is driven by their desire to propagate and continue practicing the art with fellow Ilonggo aikidoka.

Purpose

Our aim is to provide our fellow aikidoka access to regular practice in Iloilo, with consistent grading/oversight from an Aikikai Foundation-accredited organization in the Philippines.

Tenets

Regular Practice.

A budoka is only as good as his/her practice. One of Aikido Iloilo's top priorities is consistent and regular practice. To ensure this, we have personally funded and procured our own equipment (such as the mats) so our keiko schedules can be as uninterrupted as possible.

Our collaboration with West Visayas State University allows students to access Aikido practice in parallel to their academic activities.

Additionally, a dedicated Dojo is currently under construction, which will ensure permanent presence of Aikido in Iloilo.

Technical Competency and Character Development.

Intention and skill are bow and arrow: neither is useful if alone. While we strive to maintain high technical standard of practice, we also emphasize the value of virtue among our students. We regularize dojo customs that develop discipline, honor and duty, such as bayanihan in setting-up of the mats, cleaning after each practice, promptness, and respect, among others.

We have also introduced a culture where it is normal for students not to pass  if unable to perform satisfactorily during the examination: and that, it is okay! The students are encouraged to use failure as a learning experience and an opportunity to embody an important lesson: Achievement should always be earned.

Policy of Non-profit Aikido Practice.

Our most ambitious effort is in upholding our non-profit policy through our Kenshūsei Program, providing free training and uniforms to the less privileged students. Currently, all WVSU students in Aikido Iloilo: WVSU or "AIKI-WEST" (Aikido Iloilo member club) practice for free. Several AIKI-WEST students have also received their free keikogi sets through our Free Keikogi Program.

In the future, mat fees will only be required among practitioners with stable job or income.

Legitimacy.

We owe it to the students to ensure that they are certified.

"AIKIDO ILOILO" is a registered business name with the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry.

Currently, the lowest ranking staff of Aikido Iloilo is a 2nd Degree Black Belt (Nidan), qualified to conduct examinations, and issue certificate for Kyu Grades (all belts below 1st degree black belt) in accordance with the Aikikai International Regulations.

Later, once qualified, Aikido Iloilo students will be endorsed for black belt examination with Aikido Philippines examiner (holding 4th degree black belt rank or higher), or directly with a Japanese Shihan (Aikikai Hombu Dojo Instructors) during their regular visits in the Philippines.

Upon every successful examination, each promoted students are awarded with an Aikido Iloilo Certificate, and is updated in our Register of Yukyusha.

Upon reaching 4th Kyu, an Aikido Philippines certificate and booklet may also be issued as supplemental documentations to validate our students' membership with our next higher organization. This will seamlessly facilitate their introduction to other Aikido Philippines member clubs/dojo whenever they choose to cross train with them.
